Donna’s Happy Birthday

Posted by & filed under Uncategorized.

Current Photos 7-25-15 030 Wild Ones staff recently surprised Executive Director Donna VanBuecken with a 70th birthday party.  Wild Ones friends dropped by during the afternoon for cake and coffee and some story telling.  When she drove into the driveway, the banner above is what she saw.  Donna said she “had to laugh!” and that “she’s going to miss networking with everyone after she retires at the end of the year.”  So if you’re in the area for the weekend of Annual Conference, August 14-16, plan to stop by and enjoy one last event hosted by our first Wild Ones Executive Director.

Garden Walk a Big Success!

Posted by & filed under WILD Center News.

Thank you everyone who helped get the WILD Center in tip-top shape for the Homeless Connections Flower Garden Walk on July 11th.  It appears to have been a tremendous success with 232 walkers coming through to enjoy the native flower gardens as well as the Paper Valley Garden Club’s Flower Show.  Overheard by the volunteers that day were statements such as “I had never heard of Wild Ones” and “I didn’t know this place (WILD Center) existed” and “What a beautiful site.”  You are to be commended for all your efforts in making it so.  Thank you for all your help – Donna

Volunteer Opportunities:
First Thursdays at the WILD Center

Announcing Wild Ones First Thursdays at the WILD Center. In an effort to put our best foot forward to the world, Wild Ones National invites you to help us keep our headquarters looking spiffy– something we can show off to non-native landscapers and something of which native landscapers can be proud. With that in mind, we invite you to stop by on the First Thursday of the month and bring along your tools, weed-pulling gloves, and sturdy shoes – and plan to roll up your sleeves to keep the Center looking inviting for humans as well as wildlife. Although you can stop by any time of the day, and any day of the week, if you plan to be here from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month, bring a dish to share, and we’ll have potluck around 6 p.m., and share some social time together. Networking is always allowed. Call for more information 877-394-945.

GW Partners, LLC

We have signed a lease with GW Partners, LLC, to use 4 acres of upland, part of The WILD Center property, for the next two years. GW Partners will use this area to store the sand they use in conjunction with the capping function related to the PCB cleanup of the Fox River water system. There will be no PCBs stored on our property – and the monetary terms of this lease will allow Wild Ones to own the entire WILD Center site debt free.

The lease also provides for a driveway, constructed by GW Partners, which we will be able to continue to use as The WILD Center driveway/parking area, upon completion of the project.

Also, upon completion of the project, GW Partners will work with Wild Ones to restore the site as an oak savanna.

Read the Proposed Layout of property usage for the Little Lake Butte des Morts sediment remediation project (PDF file). The property is being used as an additional sand cover and cap placement material staging area.

The Fox River is the site of one of the largest PCB-contamination clean-up projects in the world. Wild Ones is pleased to be able to play a small part in reverting this river to a healthier environment. Learn more about the PCB clean-up process.
